Aged River Boat Captain is Dead
Funeral Thursday for Prominent Noble Co Pilot

Captain Irven Travis, 88, prominent local resident, died early Tuesday evening at his home following two months’ illness of complications.
Captain Travis who spent most of his life in McConnelsville, was a pilot of boats on the Muskingum and Ohio rivers for 25 years. In 1885 he was made lock tender here and was overseer of a new locks constructed at that time. Later he had charge of the government property connected with the locks.
He was a member of Valley Lodge, I. O. O. F., for the past 67 years. Captain Travis was a talented speaker and was well known throughout Morgan county.
Surviving are one daughter Mrs. Lane Schofield, of Washington, D. C.; one grandson, Irven Travis, Jr., Philadelphia, and one great-granddaughter, Leslie Jane Travis; three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Walker and Mrs. Sophia Brooke, both of McConnelsville, and Miss Mayme Travis, of Orient.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at the home. Burial will be made in the local cemetery.
