Bags Squirrels
Captain Travis, an Ardent Nimrod, Is 87
Capt. Irven Travis, 87 year-old Morgan county resident, is one of the county’s oldest licenses hunters and is also the oldest living person in the county to procure a driver’s license under the new state law, records show.
Each year since hunting and fishing licenses were first required, Capt. Travis, a Muskingum river pilot when river navigation was at its peak, has secured the necessary permit.
Being an ardent fan of the national pastime, the world series probably is responsible for saving many squirrels’ lives, as Capt. Travis devoted much of his attention during squirrel season to the series. His catch of the season is 12.
Capt. Travis started steamboating as a third cook when only 14. In seven years he reached the top and obtained his pilot’s license. His present permit expires in 1938.
He also is an author. Some of his writings, dealing with the Muskingum river, can be found in Volume 14, Archaeological Publication of Ohio. He also contributed to Who’s Who on the Ohio river and its tributaries, 1931, by Ethel A. Leahy, and to the History of Southeaster Ohio, 1928, by the late Thomas W. Lewis, Zanesville.
