It is shown by the official records that Roswell Whipple served as a private in Captain Thornton Wasson’s Company, 17th Regt. New York Detached Militia in the War of 1812. His service commenced September 8, 1812 and ended November 2, 1812, covering a period of 1 month and 23 days, for which he is shown to have been paid $11.75.

Transcriber’s notes: The letter was typed on a letterhead and has the stamp of the Adjutant General’s Office. At the bottom in handwriting “Roswell Whipple born July 30, 1774 New York”. This may have been added after the letter was received.
