Will of Hugh Brent, Lancaster County, Virginia Will Book 20:118-119, 27 January 1778
In the Name of God Amen I Hugh Brent of the County of Lancaster and Parish of Christ Church, being very sick and weak, but of perfect mind and memory do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following Viz
Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my son James Brent and his heirs all that part of the Land I live on, that lies on the North Side of the main road leading from my grand gate down to Mr. Thomas Rowands, except on a half of the wood land, also one Negroe girl Mima and her Increase, one Oval Table, one sow with pigg, one gun, and my Razors and Hone.
Imprimis I lend to my Daughter Frances Maxwell during her life one negroe woman Winny and Negroe girl Phillis and their future Increase, and one Feather Bed, one Pewter Dish and six pewter plates, four head of sheep, and the four head of cattle she now has in possession, and after her death I give the aforesaid negroes Winny and Phillis and their Increase together with the above mentioned articles to my granddaughter Elizabeth Maxwell & her heirs.
Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Sarah Berryman and her heirs one Negro girl Sinah and her increase and one negroe man Emanuel, also four head of sheep and the four head of cattle she is now in possession of and one feather bed
Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my son Newton Brent and his heirs one negro boy Charles and one negro girl Rose and her Increase also four head of young cattle and four head of sheep.
Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my son George Brent and his heirs one negro boy Danial, one netro winch Violet and her increase and one negro boy Ben also four head of sheep and four head of young cattle.
Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Katharine Brent and her heirs all the Negroes that I got by my Marriage with her Mother Easther Brent.
Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Judith Brent one negro woman Joan and her future increase.
Imprimis I lend to my loving wife Judith Brent during her life all that part of the land I live on, that lies on the south side of the main road that leads from my grand gate down to Mr. Thom Rowands and one half of the woodland on the north side of the said road
Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my son Newton Brent and his heirs (after my wife’s death) all that tract or parcel of land that I have lent to her during her life
Imprimis my will and desire is that what Tobacco and cash I have on hand, shall be applied towards the payment of my just debts, and if more than sufficient for that purpose the balance be equally divided between all my children.
Imprimis I lend to my loving wife Judith Brent during her widowhood for their support and Maintainance of her and my children, Charlotte, Priscilla, Hugh, Martin and the one she is now big with, all the rest of my Estate of what manner or kind so ever and after my wifes Marriage to be equally divided between her and my said children Charlotte, Priscilla, Hugh, Martin and the one she is now big with
Imprimis my will and desire is that my said wife Judith Brent should have the whole and sole management of my said children Charlotte, Priscilla, Hugh, Martin and the one she is now big with during her widowhood and that she shall not (during that period) be obliged to give any ________ whatever respecting my estate.
Imprimis I appoint my son James Brent and my Friends Edwin Conway and John Berryman whole and sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of January in the year of our Lord 1778.
