Robert R. Adams ’39, of Columbus, age 87, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at his residence. Born May 26, 1917, in McConnelsville, Ohio, Bob was a graduate of Antioch College and OSU where he received his master’s in metallurgical engineering. Bob worked for Battelle Memorial Institute for 43 years, beginning in 1936. During his long career, he set up Battelle’s Geneva, Switzerland operations and served as the director of the newly formed Battelle Frankfurt, Germany Laboratory. He was involved in coordinating the formation of Battelle’s nuclear and metallurgical pilot plant facilities in West Jefferson. For many years Bob and his family lived in Beirut, Lebanon. On loan from Battelle, he acted as Technical Advisor for the Advanced Research Project Agency field offices of the Department of Defense. Returning to the US in 1970 and until his retirement in 1981, he worked on many other diverse projects for Battelle, including the planning and constructing of the Academy for Contemporary Problems and the construction of the coal-gasification project at West Jefferson. A life-long ham radio operator, Bob devoted countless hours to his hobby and to community service through amateur radio. He served for many years as the President of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service of Central Ohio. He is survived by wife, Jane (Wolford) of Columbus; daughter, Barbara Dutton of Laguna Niguel, California; and son, William of Westerville.
