Hugh M. Cochran, Morgan Co. Native, Dies at Hospital
Hugh M. Cochran, 74, of 1090 Linden avenue, member of a prominent Morgan county family, and retired California lumber company executive, died at 3:15 o’clock Thursday morning at Good Samaritan hospital, where he had been a patient for the past three months.
Mr. Cochran had made his home in Zanesville for the past seven years, following his retirement as president of the Acme Lumber company, San Francisco, Calif., and as general manager of the Union Lumber company, also of San Francisco.
Mr. Cochran was born Jan. 17, 1865, at McConnelsville, the son of the late H. M. and Mary Cochran. When a young man he went to California, where he became a successful lumber operator, and was also associated with a number of other enterprises.
He had served the two lumber companies in executive capacities for more than 40 years when he retired.
His wife, Lizzie, died in California eight years ago. He was active in Masonic circles for many years, and had attained a high rank in the lodge.
Surviving are three sons, Major Hugh M., Jr., U. S. A., of Fortress Monroe, Va.; Roy, of Delhi, Calif., and Claude, of San Francisco, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. C. P. Thompson, Linden avenue, and Miss Mary L. Cochran, of McConnelsville; two brothers, W. F. Cochran, of McConnelsville, and William E. Cochran, of San Francisco; a number of nieces and nephews, including Miss Beulah Thompson and Kenneth C. Thompson, both of this city; Mrs. J. C. Rodgers, Pacific Palisades, Calif., Dr. Hugh C. Thompson, Columbus, and Mrs. Ambrose Middleton, Mansfield, and a number of grandchildren.
The body was removed to Mader-Peoples funeral home, pending arrival of Major Cochran from Fortress Monroe.
