Biography

Stephen Gates and Mary Merrick were married on 19 December 1771 in Methuen, Essex County, Massachusetts.2
He lived in Andover, Massachusetts.3 He was an assistant Capt. Benjamin Kimbal. the first settle of Bridgton, and came to in Bridgton, Cumberland County, Maine, in 1768.3 He had their intent to marry published in Methuen, Essex County, Massachusetts, on 17 August 1771. He was from Bridgton, Province of Maine and she was from Methuen2 Stephen was awarded a one hundred acre lot in June 1782 in Bridgton.4 Stephen was head of household on the 1790 US Census taken in Bridgetown, Cumberland County, Maine. The household consisted of with four males under 16, two males 16 or older and three females.5 He moved to Ohio 1790.6 He appeared on the census in 1800 in Waterford Township, Washington County, Ohio.7
