Samuel Cochran was born on 20 August 1871 in Pease Township, Belmont County, Ohio.1 He died on 7 June 1945, at age 73, in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio.2 He was buried on 9 June 1945 in Greenwood Cemetery (Zanesville), Muskingum County, Ohio.2
Samuel appeared on the 1880 US Census recorded on 17 June 1880 in Hopewell Township, Muskingum County, Ohio. Wilson Fowler3 He lived with his mother and his brother Hugh in 1896 in Zanesville, Ohio.4 He served in the Spanish American War in Company E, Thirty-first U. S. Volunteers in 1900.5 Samuel appeared on the 1900 US Census recorded in June 1900 in Company E, Thirty-first Infantry, Zamboonga, Philippine Islands.6 Samuel was an occupant at the residence of Jessie Cochran in 1901 in Zanesville: at 335 Linden Avenue. Jessie was listed as Mrs. Jessie Chritsman. Also living at the same address were Mrs. C. Cochran, Hugh M. Cochran, Samuel W. Cochran, Mrs. A. B. Victor, Mrs. C. Pierpoint, and Mrs. J. Ault7 Samuel appeared on the 1910 US Census recorded on 19 May 1910 in Zanesville. with lodgers Walter Purcell, Pearl Dickenson and Pearl Schwartz. Both mew were recorded as thieves and both women as prostitutes8 Samuel appeared on the 1920 US Census recorded on 13 January 1920 in "shacks on river bank at foot of Market St", Zanesville. He was living alone. His dwelling and the dwelling of Walter Purcell, also alone, were described at the top of the census sheet as "shacks on river bank at foot of Market St"9
