William S. Brent was born about 1813 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.2 He and Sarah Ann Lear were married on 8 August 1837 in Louisa County, Virginia.3 He and Jane A. Spaner were married on 25 October 1860 in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia.2
William was head of household on the 1840 US Census taken in Louisa County, Virginia. The household consisted of one male under five, one male 15 to 20, one male 30 to 40, one female 15 to 20, and one female 20 to 30. There were five slaves: 3 males under 10, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 24 to 35.41 He owned 6 slaves on the slave census taken, on 4 November 1850, in Spotsylvania County. 65 William and Sarah appeared on the 1850 US Census recorded on 8 November 1850 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, with Josiah, William, and Thomas.6 He was a merchant on 9 November 1850.6 He owned eight slaves on the slave census taken, on 11 July 1860, in Berkley Parish, Spotsylvania County. 87 William appeared on the 1860 US Census recorded on 11 July 1860 in Berkley Parish, Spotsylvania County, with his son Josiah and and Jos. W. Cox, a 26 year old overseer. and Jos. W. Cox, a 26 year old overseer8 He owned one slave on the slave census taken, on 24 July 1860, in St. Georges Parish, Spotsylvania County. one9
