Timothy M. Gates was born on 1 August 1777 in Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine.1,2 He and Margaret Hughes were married on 14 May 1800 in Washington County, Ohio.3 He died on 20 April 1844, at age 66.4 He was buried in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery (Bloomington), McLean County, Illinois.4
Timothy purchased a fractional lot by cash entry land patent in Morgan County, Ohio, on 30 May 1814, .5 Timothy and Margaret were deed property on 20 January 1815 in Morgan County, Ohio.6 Timothy was deeded property by William Hughs on 19 April 1819 in Morgan County, Ohio.7 Timothy was elected an addtional justice of the peace at that election on 31 July 1819.8 He was on the voter list in in McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio, on 31 July 1819 of the first Morgan Township election.8 Timothy was head of household on the 1820 US Census taken in McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio. The household consisted of three males under ten, one male 16 to 18, one male 16 to 26, one male 26 to 44, one male 45 or older, two females under ten, two females 10 to 16, one female 16 to 26 and one female 26 to 44. One person was engaged in agriculture.9 Timothy and Margaret deeded property to Caleb Wells on 2 July 1823 in Morgan County, Ohio.10 Timothy purchased 493.2 acres by cash entry land patent in Morgan County, Illinois, on 26 July 1825, .11 Timothy and Margaret deeded property to William Brown on 24 November 1825 in Morgan County, Ohio.12 Timothy was head of household on the 1830 US Census taken in Morgan Township, Morgan County, Ohio. The household consisted of one male under five, one male 10 to 14, two males 15 to 19, one male 20 to 29, one male 40 to 49, one male 50 to 59, one female 10 to 14, one female 15 to 19 and one female 40 to 49.13 Timothy and Margaret deeded property to Benjamin W. Conklins on 4 October 1830 in Morgan County, Ohio.14 Timothy purchased 81.28 acres by land patent in McLean County, Illinois, on 1 October 1832, .15 Timothy purchased 40 acres by land patent in McLean County, Illinois, on 20 March 1837, .16 Timothy purchased 40 acres by land patent in McLean County, Illinois, on 20 March 1837, .17 Timothy was head of household on the 1840 US Census taken in McLean County, Illinois. The household consisted of two males 20 to 30, one male 50 to 60, and one female 20 to 30.18
